Now that September has rolled around, it’s time to start planning my boys’ birthday parties. Jax’s birthday is in January and Hudson’s is in February, they are exactly 2 years and 2 weeks apart. I absolutely love planning their parties, mostly to see the joy on their faces when the day comes – such a fun time!
With Jax I did a big to-do (him being the first child and all, aww poor Hudson). I had about 35 or so people in the house to celebrate – it was chaos but so fun! It was mostly our friends since most 1-year-olds don’t have buddies yet. To keep it as simple as possible, I ordered pizzas and had some simple appetizers, and yes, cake! We also served some wine, beer, and cocktails (for the adults, of course).
That said, I decided next time we were going to a place where the kids can get messy. In all honestly, I didn’t want to have a 1st birthday party for Hudson (I know, I know, poor second child). But it is a milestone and he deserved it! Jax’s birthday comes first, so when he turned three we decided to host it at Cosmic Adventureswhere we already have a membership. We had a small family party for his 2nd birthday since I was about to pop with Hudson!
Cosmic Adventures was an amazing option for a party! You get 30 minutes in the games room with some tokens for each child, 45 minutes in their play structure and 1 hour in the party room. The entire party lasts 2 hours and 15 minutes, but you can play for hours afterwards, AND bonus, on weekends spray tattoos are included! All the kiddos had a blast and the staff there were incredible. Once you’re done playing you get to eat pizza and goodies while being entertained. You also get a wicked birthday cake… Jax chose Spiderman, of course, and the birthday boy gets a super cool cosmic t-shirt. Our package also included loot bags (one less thing to worry about) but you can choose from a variety of packages to suit your needs.
For Hudson’s first birthday, we decided to try out one of the Brown’s Independent Grocer parties in the party room where they host their cooking classes. We had been a few times for their toddler cooking classes and they were fabulous, so we assumed the parties would be equally as awesome. We chose the pizza making party and it was a perfect idea! The kids get to make their own little pizzas, decorate cupcakes and take them home. They do crafts while waiting for their pizza, and then gobble them up. There is lots of time left after for playing and opening presents. It’s a large room with a full kitchen, it’s also nice that you can just rent out the room for a small fee if you want to do the whole party on your own.
So this all brings us to the next birthday celebrations for Jax who is turning 4 in January, and Hudson turning 2 in February. Since they have the same friends for now, I’ll probably do a joint party this year. Because it was literally the same group of friends between the Cosmic Adventures and Independent Grocer parties two weeks apart. I was also contemplating a little getaway to Great Wolf Lodge for them instead but I’m on the fence. I’ll have to pick Jax’s brain more to see what he thinks!
Do you have any recommendations for birthday parties for kids? I was thinking of trying out Dovercourt Recreation Centre because their parties look awesome from the descriptions. Another one that is peaking my interest is the Museum of Nature parties. You can choose by theme like dinosaurs, or bugs – perfect for little boys. Those are currently at the top of my list but there are so many options in Ottawa. I probably won’t do birthday parties at my house anymore, so I love all the options for birthday parties in and around the city. Hit me up with your recommendations!
