Jax loves getting out and participating in activities. As you know, I’ve been taking him to swimming lessons since he was 3 months old and in a recent blog, talked about how we switched him from city lessons to The Aqualife Academy. I was itching to get him into something else fun and stumbled on Little Kickers when I saw a friend’s son on Facebook taking part in it. I looked it up and saw that they take kids as young as 18 months so I thought it was worth a try! We signed up online for the Stittsville location (there are locations all over the Ottawa area, and apparently all over the world) and were told there was a bit of a waiting list so we waited patiently, and were excited when we were contacted to start!
That was almost 2 years ago.
Now, Jax is in a class for older kids called “Mighty Kickers” (ages 3 ½ to 5). It’s neat to see how they progress and how they start off with just simple basics in the early programs. When we started with “Little Kicks” (ages 18 months to 2 ½), parents were required to participate and help along since they were so little (as are the attention spans)!
It’s not just about soccer, learning goals include colours, body parts, language, numeracy, sharing, listening, confidence, gross motor skills and of course the basics of soccer. It’s really quite the program! When they graduate to “Junior Kickers” (aged 2 ½ to 3 ½), with the use of imagination and with buckets of fun they learn early learning goals and soccer basics through play. They start to learn soccer stops and other drills. At this point, parents no longer need to participate, and can now enjoy being a cheerleader!
Now that Jax is in Mighty Kickers they have real little soccer matches which is absolutely adorable. We really love watching, it’s so cute! The coaches are AMAZING and so great with children. It’s no doubt since all of the coaches undergo an intensive training program starting as Volunteers/Assistants with the opportunity to progress up to Coaching Mentor/Director.
Graham and Megan are the franchisee owners in Ottawa, and began working with the Little Kickers program in the UK in 2009. They were thrilled to have the opportunity to bring their passion with them when they moved to Ottawa in 2014, and this January will mark Little Kickers Ottawa’s 5thanniversary. And congratulations to Little Kickers operating all over the world! Pretty amazing!
What do we love the most about Little Kickers? It gives us an opportunity to have an active activity all year round! When we aren’t playing soccer in the park, we are in a local gym indoors getting our activities in. Such a huge bonus to be able to do this even when there’s lots of snow on the ground.
I don’t see an end in sight for us attending these classes. When he turns five in just over a year they will work to continue to build upon and refine basic soccer skills introduced in the younger age groups. Good sportsmanship is also a focus with these ages. Once children are ready, they will graduate into Little Kickers partner club “Green Wave Soccer” (ages 7 – 12 years) where he will have the opportunity to participate in friendly matches and tournaments.
I think Jax will be happy to continue but right now, we’ll take it one day at a time! We highly recommend the Little Kickers program. Any questions about soccer, just ask! We are now officially soccer parents!
