I was always active growing up. I didn’t play a lot of sports, but my parents put me in Tae Kwon Do when I was a kid. I practiced often, eventually earning my 2nd degree black belt – to this day, I’m very proud of this achievement.
After Tae Kwon Do, I started working out at the gym and continued for many years, occasionally adding running and yoga into the mix. I did Greco Lean & Fit for some time and thoroughly enjoyed those workouts as it was quick and fun. I even did my Greco workouts religiously until I was 7 months pregnant with Jax. People thought I was nuts but I was keeping fit and I loved it (I modified certain stations for safety reasons, of course).
Once I had Jax, I decided to join Movati Athletic which had a beautiful new facility just five-minutes from my home, and the daycare facility was fabulous! I started slowly 6 weeks postpartum. I really feel the daycare service helped Jax become the little social butterfly that he is today!
Fast forward to going back to work after Jax and I basically kissed exercise goodbye altogether which bothered me but unfortunately it was too busy working full time and managing the home life. There was no way I was getting up any earlier than I already was just to exercise. Thank god for our dog Nika, I got in a half hour walk everyday!
My pregnancy with Hudson came shortly after I returned to work and exercise consisted of just my daily walks with Nika. When I went on my second maternity leave, I was a new mom of TWO babies, and the anxiety of hauling those TWO kids out of the house to the gym with me was just too scary. So that threw the idea of returning to Movati right out the window! Around this same time, we purchased a BowFlex M7 cardio machine and with some weights in the house, I tried to do some light workouts during naps. It’s hard for me to stay focused working out at home, but it makes the most sense for my lifestyle right now.
I was looking for new ways to stay motivated at home and I found Fleming Fitness after researching personal training options. After a bit of a workout hiatus I signed up with them and really couldn’t be happier! The best part? They come to me! It doesn’t get more convenient than that for busy moms. It started out with a consultation/assessment at their studio (but could also be at your home) that included discussions surrounding nutrition, reading food labels, my goals and what it will take to reach them. Goal #1: Help me get rid of my mommy tummy! One of the reasons I selected them is their expertise in pre and post natal training and getting new moms back into shape.
I also love that they have raised over $100,000 in just 5 years for the Brain Injury Association of the Ottawa Valley. They have a lot of experience with injury and rehabilitation through their training.
Fleming Fitness just celebrated their 10-year anniversary – I was honoured to attend the event at their new studio, which is amazing, and will most likely go there when the kids are in school full time. Right now I’m just happy they can come to me as it’s a much more efficient use of my mom time!
