Now that the American Thanksgiving is over, we are ready start our Christmas decorating! Not that we are American, but for our family it just seems like the right time. Not too early, not too late – just enough time to enjoy the beautiful décor over the holiday season.
We keep it simple with a Christmas tree and hung stockings over the fireplace. Last year, we went all out with outdoor Christmas lights on both floors of the house in warm white. I originally started with just the first level but it didn’t seem like enough. There is nothing I love more than simple white Christmas lights! I also ordered my Christmas planter for the porch from Candace Malette Landscaping and Design, she does such an amazing job.
In a few years we’ll probably get big blow-ups and some of that other tacky stuff (for the kids, of course)!
When we purchased our tree and décor a few years back we were child-free and chose a beautiful purple and gold colour scheme. I got all my ornaments at Hudson’s Bay when they had a huge sale on Gluckenstein Home holiday décor. For many years before that I only had a little Charlie Brown tree from Pier 1 Imports. It did the trick – especially with no kids.
Family traditions started once I got my first actual Christmas tree – we would have my parents over, pour some festive drinks, put Christmas tunes on and have a wonderful time decorating together. I’ll be honest, I don’t think I put the tree up for two if not three years after my father passed away in 2012. Holidays with deceased loved ones can be so hard, and it just didn’t feel the same without him there to take part.
I’ll never lose my Dad in my heart or ever stop missing him for one minute, but life must go on and I had to get back at it. Of course, when Jax came along it got me excited to restart our traditions, and then Hudson. It is true that Christmas is better with kids, for us anyway. I know my Dad is still with us every day and often we chat about him. We can still be brought to tears but there are also lots of happy tears full of funny stories that melt our hearts. My one wish is that he would have met our boys, but Jax talks about Grandpa Bruno a lot and we make an effort to visit him often.
It’s amazing how the tree slowly changes once you have kids. At first it was just one lonesome Baby’s first Christmas ornament amongst the sea of purple and gold. Slowly but surely it’s becoming less purple and gold, and more whimsical. Jax loves to pick out ornaments every time we go to the grocery store. And now I really love my mismatched tree! I do recall once saying I’ll have an elegant grown-up tree upstairs and the kids one downstairs but who has time for that, NOT ME! My absolute favourite ornament on the tree is one that Jax came home from daycare with. I laughed so hard and I’ll keep it until the day I die. It’s so special that he made it for us.
For our stockings we got new ones from Pottery Barn Kids Woodland Collection last year and had them personalized. We have Dad, Mom, Jax and Hudson. Of course, we can’t forget Nika (but unfortunately hers isn’t personalized)!
Now that it’s feeling festive over here at our house, it’s time to visit Santa and attend all the fun holiday events that Ottawa has to offer. Of course, you’ll learn all about them in my next blog posts. I love attending kids activities near me and checking out all the fun attractions! But if you want recommendations in advance, feel free to contact me! Tell me about your holiday decorating traditions! I love how everyone’s are so unique!
Until next time.
