As a couple, John and I have only ever been away from Jax for two nights for a little weekend getaway at the Wakefield Mill in Chelsea, Quebec. This was pre-Hudson, so it was quite easy for my mom and her boyfriend to take care of him while we were away.
All parents are different, but at that time we didn’t want to travel very far away regardless of who was taking care of him. My best friend Sonya lives in LA, and I have travelled there to visit her a few times. I was lucky enough to go solo when I was still pregnant with Hudson, and since my mom, mother-in-law and hubby were home I set out for what I thought would be my last visit for a while.
On day 1 of that solo trip, I recall walking down the streets of Santa Monica and I Face-timed Jax. Naturally, he didn’t want me to hang up and of course I started bawling my eyes out (blame it on the pregnancy hormones)! I knew he was in good hands with my family so I enjoyed my stay and considered it a luxury before I was about to pop out a second child and life would drastically change.
We love travelling with our kids but when my husband won a trip to LA for reaching a sales goal at work we decided to make a trip out of it for both of us. We were armed with my mom and two of my girlfriends to take care of them so we weren’t worried. The trip was for 2 nights in Beverly Hills, so we decided to extend the trip by an extra two nights and stay at Sonya’s house. It’s quite a long way to go from Ottawa to Los Angeles (with no direct flights). We found this time around, less Facetime, made it easier on the boys.
We stayed at the cutest hotel in Beverly Hills called the Avalon, very 70s inspired with its décor. When I googled the history, I learned so many interesting facts like Marilyn Monroe actually lived there for three years! It was a beautiful boutique hotel that I absolutely recommend if you’re travelling to that area.
We had lots of fun in Beverly Hills and did all the touristy things, of course. We hung out in Santa Monica and Venice Beach which has a much cooler vibe that we were more into. Along the way we met Josh Altman from Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing LA and Robin Wright at this amazing hot spot called Élephante. I highly recommend a visit there if you’re in Santa Monica. It rained on our last day so we returned because it was the perfect place to have some cocktails in a warm sheltered area with stunning views of the ocean. Afterwards we headed for our friends place just 20 minutes out of Santa Monica for an authentic take-out Mexican dinner and great fun with games!
Four days was perfect to be away from the little ones, any longer would have been too much for us. With travel, it was 5 full days. We made sure to visit the local Target near my friends place to give the kids much promised gifts which ended up being a surprise of Monster Trucks by Hot Wheels (not yet in Canada so even better).
We had such a wonderful time and it was so great to come home. Next up, Mexico for the whole family in only in a matter of days! We are so excited, and can’t wait for our next trip to LA to visit our friends. One day we will bring the kids and make it a Disneyworld trip!
Parents, how do you feel about travelling without your kids? Do you need the time away? Or do you always include your kids in your vacations?
