Hola! Our family just returned from the most wonderful time at the Royalton Riviera Cancun in Mexico – a much-needed break from this terrible Ottawa, Canada winter!
We stayed at the same resort as we did last year for my friend’s wedding (click through to see last year’s post on how this resort was the perfect place for a family vacation with young kids)!
In January of this year, we decided to book last minute and return to the Royalton Riviera Cancun for another fun-filled family getaway.
We knew all the travel tricks this time around, so we brought mini Lego packages, sticker books, colouring books, go fish games and lots more. Let’s not forget the saviour that is the iPad. One for each boy, of course! It kept them busy the whole time. Thankfully it was a breeze there and back.
This year, the Royalton added a new feature where you could pick your room within your category through their new online room selector which we found extremely handy because we already knew the resort. For approximately $70 USD they show you the resort map and rooms available within your category and you select the one you want. We also paid the extra fee to pre-select our plane seats through Sunwing Vacations. We wanted to sit close to the front, and obviously altogether in the same row (since there were 6 of us). This was a nice option because you don’t need to worry about getting there three hours in advance to get the best seats, a huge bonus when your flight is at 6am!
The beauty of a 6am flight is that you get there with a full day of fun in the sun, so we truly had seven full days of vacation. Furthermore, we upgraded when we arrived to a more direct ocean front view which was really awesome. While the swim out option is great, and we will do it again, with little ones like mine right now it’s harder to manage when the door is open they want to go out and swim. With the ocean view room you just leave the door open and the little rascals can go in and out as they please.
The kids preferred the pool over the ocean so my mom would watch the kids while my husband and I had a chance to take in the beach and ocean. The kids did manage to enjoy some time out there a couple of times with sand toys in tow. Like last time, we brought our own sand toys and balls because they are ridiculously priced at the resort. We also made sure that we had long-sleeved swim shirts for them to prevent burning their little arms.
When it came time for dinner, we found ourselves at the a-la-carte restaurants every night instead of the buffet. While getting ready we would order room service for the kids so they were fed, and then we could have whatever we wanted without worrying that there was nothing on the menu for them.
The Indian Restaurant Taj, was a new addition in their restaurant line up and it was incredible! We ate there a couple times, but also tried Hunter Steakhouse twice. I wasn’t keen on going to a steakhouse but sucked it up because I was the minority. Once there, I obviously had to order a steak (when in Rome) and it was one of the best steaks I’ve eaten in years! We also had the Caribbean restaurant twice because lobster tails … enough said, right? I was in heaven as lobster is one of my absolute favourite foods. For our last dinner we had a wonderful meal at their Italian restaurant Grazie. Needless to say, the food blew us away!
I highly recommend upgrading to the Diamond Club for the a-la-carte restaurants alone, only Diamond Club guests can reserve through your assigned butler. Otherwise you will be waiting a while, not ideal with kids. You also receive other perks like your own designated pool and beach area which is much quieter.
I literally had post vacation depression coming back to cold and snow but now we are back in our groove and spring is around the corner, thank God! We are looking forward to summer vacations ahead and seeing which Royalton Resort we will visit next to help us survive our dreary winter months.
