I’m sitting writing this just a few hours after I’ve arrived home from the beautiful Wakefield Mill and Spa. I turn 40 in a couple of days and when my husband asked about a party, I said no way! I love a good party but was just not feeling it for my 40th. He insisted on something special for the milestone so I thought, why not a couple of kid-free nights at one of my favourite spots, the Wakefield Mill and Spa!
We were lucky to have some great friends take care of the kiddos, Jax and Hudson just love these girls so I knew they were in good hands. We really don’t like travelling without them, and they will always come with us on our trips south but a couple nights away for us parents is so needed.
We left on Monday afternoon and decided to have a late lunch at one of our favourite stops, The Chelsea Pub. Seriously, if you guys haven’t gone you must check it out. Just a 20-minute drive from downtown Ottawa, the Chelsea Pub is in the lovely town of Chelsea, Quebec and is the quaintest little pub with great beer, food and ambiance. We shared some drinks and food before heading on our way to check in at the hotel, another 20 minute drive from Chelsea.
We have stayed there twice before and enjoyed it both times. Once long ago before kids and once when our eldest Jax was about 8 months old. As soon as we checked in, we headed straight for the pool. Our room was in the Eco Lodge which is a newer addition to the actual mill, LEED certified and much more modern than the original building. Both are lovely and we’ve stayed in both.
We decided to stay at the hotel for dinner and opted for the more casual Heron Wine Bar. I chose the salmon cakes (fabulous) and my husband had a delicious salad with chicken. All with a beautiful view of the MacLaren Falls. After dinner we were able relax on our patio with a lovely garden view.
The next day we woke up and headed down to the breakfast buffet which consisted of eggs, bacon, pancakes, meats, cheeses, breakfast pastries and much more. Apparently the spread is even larger on weekends!
After such a plentiful meal it was time for a long walk in Wakefield, Quebec. I love visiting charming little towns like this and shopping in the cutest local shops. My favourite was La Tortue de Wakefield, a home goods store with the most amazing items for the home, as well as jewelry and children’s toys. Naturally we had to get something for the boys.
We made it back just in the nick of time for massages in their spa. All with a view of the falls out the window. Then lunch time at another favourite spot, Le Hibou. More amazing food and views of the water!
Next up, a whole day poolside with the odd dip in the hot tub. One section with a saltwater heated pool and hot tub, and the mill area there is a hot tub and sauna. We made some great friends and ended up having dinner with them that night.
After a couple few days, it was time to get back to our boys so we enjoyed our second breakfast with a view, took a little walk and jumped in the car home! We will be back a fourth time as we love this little spot and always look forward to returning. It’s a perfect spot for a getaway while close to home. I highly recommend you check them out. It’s worth the drive just for lunch, dinner or even cocktails on their beautiful patio.
What little gems have you discovered close to Ottawa for a much needed getaway? Looking forward to hearing your ideas!
